Forest Annex

Rockport, Maine

Located in a private wood, accessed solely by a rustic wooden foot bridge, this annex contains a home office, a billiards room, a personal gymnasium, and a guest suite. As stylistic companion to the main residence, this design features a classically ordered symmetrical composition and trim profiles rendered in a traditional shingle-style vocabulary suited to coastal Maine.

Since the site was endowed with handsome mature white pines, remote from any road, the building was designed to nestle into a tight clearing on a rock ledge. Patinated copper, sawn red cedar shingles, and rough-hewn local granite marry the building to its setting.

By carefully matching the profiles on the off-the-shelf doors with custom paneling, a harmonious American cherry interior was created at modest cost.
